Transitional Design

Websters labels transitional as “a change from one state”. In the world of home design that change is understood to be the middle ground between traditional and contemporary. It stands to reason that as younger generation grow up that their sensibility may not be that of their parents.  That said the world we grow up in does imprint heavy on us. Perhaps that is why “Transitional Design” has become so popular these days.  The blend of cleaner lines, mixing on modern and rustic, the simplification of ornamentation all contributes to this aesthetic.  Sometimes it is an obvious juxtaposition of elements, but sometimes it’s subtle. Take the classic 2 over2 pane double hung window for example. This window may still be used in a house as it has been for over 150 years, but if we tweak the proportions and increased it in size by 100% it now suggests a more contemporary window. Yet the frame style is rooted in the past, blurring the lines between old and new. Sleight of hand perhaps, or maybe just transitional!

Take a peek at a transitional house shown above, “Rock Ridge Pond” that was on the 2019 Wellesley Kitchen tour.
