Second Empire Revisited: Newton, MA
The Bailey House, overlooking Kenrick Park in Newton, stands as a distinguished example of Second Empire architecture—though time and neglect have taken their toll. The existing L-shaped plan offered a natural opportunity to introduce much-needed program while maintaining the home’s historic integrity. By infilling the interior corner, the design team was able to weave in a contemporary wing that responds sensitively to its historic context.
As in many European settings where old and new structures meet in complementary dialogue, a similar approach was taken here. Drawing from the strong contextual lines of the original residence—such as the mansard roof and prominent frieze—the addition pays homage to the past while asserting its own modern identity. Through material contrast and refined proportions, the new work resonates harmoniously, grounded in the character of the historic home.
