The Sumner mansion is rich in history and a catalyst for the development of the area, laying claim to being Jamaica Plains first house on the namesake Sumner Hill. The home was built for a prominent figure General William Sumner, a man whose father Increase Sumner was Governor of Massachusetts. The families’ influences were far reaching ,including the planning and development of East Boston. Subsequently the tunnel to the airport is named after them.
